I asked on Instagram and Facebook the other day if I should do a Q & A post and it was unanimously decided that I should, in fact, do it. Unfortunately, no one had any questions, so I took it upon myself to find ones to answer. As I’m a relatively open book (and because I’ve done a few “Random Facts” posts) I didn’t feel like anyone would be super interested in the basics, so I went on the hunt for questions I’ve not answered on the blog before.
I came across this post from Molly of Still Being Molly and thought her questions were great, and knew I wanted to answer them myself.
Here are my answers to the 50 Completely Random Questions People Rarely Ask Blog Tag!
1. What’s your favorite candle scent?
It honestly depends on the season. During summer I love Bath and Body Works’ Watermelon Lemonade scent, fall is all the pumpkin scents (Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin and Vanilla Pumpkin Marshmallow <3), winter is cinnamon and pine trees and warmth, and spring is anything fresh and bright that’s not floral. There was a time when I loved floral-scented candles, but as my allergies have gotten worse, I can’t handle them anymore.
2. What female celebrity do you wish you were related to?
Ellen DeGeneres! She’s inspiring and giving and loving, but she’s also funny and fun and human. Plus, can you imagine being invited to one of her parties?!
3. What male celebrity do you wish was your brother?
Josh Gad. He’s funny and musical, but he also seems like the kind of person you could go hang out with and have a movie night at his house with him, his wife, and his kids.
4. What’s your favorite thing about marriage? (And if you’re not married, what’s your favorite thing about being single?)
I genuinely love that I have someone always in my corner. He supports every crazy idea I have, and he never makes me feel like I can’t do anything. Plus, it’s nice to have someone to answer the door for me when someone comes knocking without warning and my instinct is to hide.
5. What’s one thing you own that you should probably get rid of, but just can’t?
Oh my gosh, so many things. HA! Shane jokingly calls me a hoarder. But honestly, I think the things I’ve always said I should get rid of but can’t is any craft stuff. I’m always telling myself I’ll do the project when XYZ happens, but I still haven’t and some of the materials I’ve had for years. YEARS! So I’ve started purging stuff in my craft room recently and it makes me a little sad, but it’s also incredibly cleansing.
6. Can you do a split?
HA! No. Never have been able to.
7. How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike?
I was always a scared child, so I don’t think I learned until I was 7 or 8. I was pretty young, I know that, because I was riding a bike when I chipped my front tooth and I was probably 8 then.
8. How many oceans have you swam in?
Technically just one – Atlantic. But that’s assuming you consider the Gulf of Mexico to be part of the Atlantic. Otherwise, I’ve always swam at Daytona Beach just off the east coast of Florida which is indisputably the Atlantic Ocean.
9. How many countries have you been to?
Two – U.S. and Canada. And for anyone wondering, Niagara Falls is better from the Canadian side.
10. Is anyone in your family in the military?
My brother-in-law was in the army, and my step-sister was, too. My maternal great-grandfather was in the air force during WW2 and my paternal grandfather was in the air force, too, stationed all over the place (my uncle was born on an AF base in Japan!).
11. What was your favorite TV show when you were a child?
Oh god, do I have to try to narrow it down to just one? I’m in that weird part of the millennial generation where I grew up with all the 90s shows, but I also was on the Lizzie McGuire/That’s So Raven train. I was obsessed with Barney for an embarrassingly longest time, though.
12. What did you dress up as on Halloween when you were eight?
Probably a pumpkin. I had this pumpkin costume I wore for a few years in a row, because I was a child and children are weird and repetitive.
13. Have you read any of the Harry Potter, Hunger Games, or Twilight series?
Yes, to all of them. Huge Potterhead for life, read Hunger Games when one of the kids in the afterschool program let me borrow her book, and then I caught the Twilight fever when Mom made me read the books after she borrowed them from one of her friends. Funnily enough, that’s how my love for Harry Potter started, and she’d been trying to get me to read the Hunger Games series forever, too.
14. Would you rather have an American or British accent?
British as long as it meant I could live in England. Anglophile might begin to cover it…
15. Have you ever taken karate lessons?
No, but I did do a different form of martial arts – Tang Sos Do – when I was 11. I got my yellow belt, decided it was too hard, and quit.
16. Do you know who Kermit the Frog is?
17. What’s the first amusement park you’ve been to?
Other than local state fairs, it was probably Disneyland California Adventures with my dad and oldest sister for spring break in 2000. That was my first true amusement park experience.
18. What language, besides your native language, would you like to be fluent in?
Spanish, for sure. It’s just super practical to know in this area. Also French because it’s beautiful and passionate, German because it’s fun and I started taking it in college but didn’t finish more than a semester, and Gaelic because how freaking cool would it be? Plus we’re Irish descendents.
19. Do you spell the color as grey or gray?
Grey. With an E. At first I didn’t care, then learned that the British way was with an E, then my bff named her baby Greyson with an E so now it’s all an E.
20. Do you know triplets?
Do I? I feel like I do, but I’m not sure. If you are a triplet and you’re reading this and we know each other IRL, I’m sorry for forgetting you, but also, let me know because that’s super cool.
21. Do you prefer Titanic or The Notebook?
I’ve never seen The Notebook, so I’d have to give it to Titanic. Plus, Leo in the 90s and I love Kate Winslet. Plus plus, I grew up with that movie.
22. Have you ever had Indian food?
Yes, and I very much enjoyed it, but it’s been too long.
23. What’s the name of your favorite restaurant?
Oooh! Good question. It depends on my mood. But I’d say a great place to take me where I’ll always be happy is Into My Garden Tea Room in Plano, TX. I did this post on them, and I’m been going there for almost 15 years, so I’m a bit attached. There are plenty of places I default to, but definitely wouldn’t put them as my favorites, and there are also plenty that I’ve been to once or twice that I’d love to visit again.
24. Have you ever been to Olive Garden?
Heck yeah! I crave their salad and breadsticks, and I love to get their Creamy Chicken Gnocchi Soup. I haven’t been in a long time, but their chicken scampi is my go-to, and one time they had an absolutely incredible toasted marshmallow martini. YUM!
25. What would your parents have named you if you were the opposite gender?
Guy Eric Brennan Spangler. Guy is a family name, and every male on my dad’s side has been given Guy as their first name dating back quite a few generations, but my mom said they’d have called me Eric. It’s all very German until you get to the Brennan part which is where my genealogy-obsessed parents insisted I have an Irish middle name, too. It’s why my middle name now is Kelsey.
26. If you have a nickname, what is it?
I never really had a nickname because my name is already pretty short. My niece and my sister call me Bebe (pronounced the Spanish way – “beh-beh”), and my mom started calling me Cupcake a few years back (which is where I got the blog names), but other than that, the only thing that’s come close is my mom calling me “Kels”.
27. Who’s your favorite person in the world?
My husband. Duh. But my best friend and sister come pretty dang close.
28. Would you rather live in a rural area or in the suburbs?
Another good one. I think, for me, it depends on how close I am to my friends and family, what kind of rural it is (big trees? yes), and access to modern amenities (e.g. Target, Starbucks, etc.). We live in the ‘burbs now and have for quite a number of years, so it’s really all either of us have known. In our adult lives, anway.
29. Can you whistle?
A little. And not a tune. Just enough to make a noise.
30. Do you sleep with a nightlight?
No. I prefer to sleep with as little light as possible.
31. Do you eat breakfast every morning?
Yes. I’m currently in a position to be able to go into work pretty late, so I almost always cook up some eggs and toast in the morning. Otherwise I’ll usually do oatmeal or a shake/smoothie if I’m on the go. But I definitely can’t not eat breakfast.
32. How many times have you been to the hospital?
For myself? Very rarely. Maybe 5 times my whole life. For others, plenty. Mostly for babies being born.
33. Have you ever seen Finding Nemo?
Heck yeah! I saw it when it first came to theaters! Still haven’t watched Finding Dory yet, though.
34. Where do you buy your jeans?
I was buying them at Torrid, but now I’ve started getting them from Target since they came out with their Universal Thread brand. They’re half the price of Torrid jeans, and fit so well.
35. What’s the last compliment you got?
I had a customer tell me I was really helpful at work today. But otherwise, it was probably my husband telling me he likes my butt or something. LOL!
36. Do you usually remember your dreams in the morning?
Sometimes, but not all the time. I’ve had some of my best story ideas come from dreams. I also had a weird dream that I was hanging out with Angela Kinsey (from The Office) at her house the other day. Part of my whole, forgetting we don’t know each other IRL, thing.
37. Favorite beverage that isn’t water?
This should be obvious – coffee. And if that wasn’t obvious to you, I’ve done a good job hiding my caffeine addiction.
38. How many pairs of shoes do you currently own?
Surprisingly, quite a few. I’ve been trying to sell some on Poshmark, but I really only have maybe 5 pairs that I actually wear.
39. How old were you when you found out that Santa wasn’t real?
Ex-squeeze me? Santa is real, thank you very much.
40. What is one food that you used to hate but now you love?
Squash and Caesar salad
41. What is a weird lie you’ve told?
I’m so awkward, I’ve probably told many lies in the moment and then couldn’t figure out why the heck I’d even lied about the random thing.
42. Heels or flats?
Flats all the way. I can’t do heels, and rarely have an occasion to, even if I liked wearing them.
43. Do you have any weird phobias?
Balloons! I’ll let Roy from IT Crowd explain it in this picture.
44. What is a phrase or word you always say?
“I love you” and “Okie dokie”. Because I always tell people I love that I love them. And I’m pretty agreeable most of the time. I also say “fuck” a lot. Like, a lot.
45. What is a song that you bast or belt out when you are alone?
Almost any Disney song. But I’ll do it whether or not I’m alone.
46. What is one of your biggest pet peeves?
Oh freaking man. Have I mentioned I am my father’s child? Because I definitely am. I have so many pet peeves it borders on pathetic. I’m a pretty impatient person, so any time someone is doing something slower than I think they should be doing it bothers me. I hate when someone is in my personal space or, even worse, touching me. I hate having to repeat myself even once (impatience, y’all). So many things.
47. Do you sleep with your closet door open or closed?
Closed. I’m not a fan of opening my eyes and seeing a big black hole of darkness in the middle of the night.
48. Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of bees?
I’d probably say bees since my chance for survival is highest and my chance for losing any limbs is lowest.
49. Do you have any weird things you do?
I hate talking on the phone. If I can text or email you, I would so rather do that. I’m a writer and I’m anxious, so I need time to process my response before I deliver it to make sure it’s what I want to say. I pretty much only talk to my husband, my sister, or my super close friends on the phone. But I could stay on the phone with them for hours.
50. What movie could you watch over and over again and still love?
There are so many. I’m such a movie person and can watch my favorites over and over, but I’d probably say either You’ve Got Mail or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
That’s it, you guys! Those are all 50 questions. I hope you enjoyed getting to learn a little more about me. If you want to do this tag, just copy the questions and answer them on your page. I’d love to come read them. And don’t forget to go check out Molly’s blog (not that she needs my shoutout as she has way more of a following).
